Why INVICTVS?

Invictvs (Latin, "Invincible") is an epithet that was often applied to various gods in the traditional Roman religion, especially those with aspects that emphasized their patronage of Roman soldiers and the success of Roman military operations.  At various times the Roman gods Jupiter, Mars, Apollo, Sol, and Mithras were all accorded this dignity.  I've always liked the sound of Sol Invictvs ("the Invincible Sun"), hence all the solar iconography.

Since Roman history was my first academic love (I bought a children's book on Roman history at a school book sale when I was in fourth grade), terms drawn from the Latin language have always held a particular interest for me.  However, in most times and places ancient warriors counted on the patronage of their gods or god to lend their armies an aura of invincibility, so it seemed to me a particularly appropriate name to use for a website dedicated to ancient and Medieval military history.

The Latin language had no U, the letter V being given double-duty.  I chose to use the Latin spelling for completely subjective reasons—I just like the look of it.
